Michiel was sworn in as a lawyer in Haarlem in 1998. For about ten years, he worked in Haarlem in a commercial corporate law practice and was often appointed as trustee and receiver in bankruptcies and suspensions of payment.

In 2003, Michiel completed the Insolad/Grotius specialisation training programme in Insolvency Law, after which he followed the specialisation course in Financial Economics for Trustees in 2007. Michiel is a member of the Netherlands Association for Insolvency lawyers (Insolad).

Michiel joined HVG Law at the start of 2008.
