Willem Visser ‘t Hooft is connected with HVG Law as “Of Counsel” and is responsible for the legal counseling of Japanese clients in Japanese. He also advises Dutch companies that conduct business in Japan.
For more than 15 years Willem advises Japanese companies about Dutch law and often has a coordinating role.
Willem graduated in 1992 in both Dutch law and Japanese language and culture from Leiden University. He subsequently started his doctoral research at the University of Tokyo (1992-1995). In 2000, he obtained his doctorate from Leiden University with a thesis on Japanese law, entitled: ‘Japanese Contract and Antitrust Law: A Sociological and Comparative Study’ (Routledge Curzon, 2002).
Willem has been working as a lawyer since 2002. In addition, he serves as a guest lecturer on Japanese law at Dutch universities, and frequently publishes on this subject.
Willem is a frequent speaker at seminars and conferences (often in Japanese), and takes part in trade missions to Japan. Furthermore, he is actively involved in many events for the promotion of Dutch-Japanese relations.
Willem is a member of the board of DUJAT (“Dutch Japanese Trade Federation”).
Willem speaks Japanese, English, French and German.
