Matthijs is a partner in the expertise Corporate M&A at HVG Law, which is part of the global EY Law network. He is a corporate lawyer based in Amsterdam where he leads the expertise Corporate M&A.
Matthijs is a corporate lawyer with a particular focus on (cross border) mergers and acquisitions, private equity transactions, controlled auctions, joint ventures, (vendor) due diligence investigations and corporate governance related matters. He also represents management teams in buy-outs.
Matthijs has worked extensively in M&A including in the hospitality sector, the TMT sector (including for Sony, KPN, Veon, Enreach and Liberty Global), industrials (including deals for Aalberts Industries), energy and utilities (NUON, Eneco, Klimaatfonds Nederland), agriculture and food (including M&A for Fonterra, Cargill and Tetra Pak) and real estate (Wereldhave).
In private equity Matthijs worked with various PE firms, including CVC Capital Partners, Advent International, Cerberus, Hg, Waterland Private Equity, Bencis Capital and Parcom Capital.
Before joining HVG Law in 2016, Matthijs spent 12 years in the international Corporate/M&A practice at Allen & Overy LLP. Also, he spent over a year in the New York office of A&O, where he worked in the Banking team advising on acquisition financings.
Matthijs has in-house experience during a client assignments at ABN AMRO Bank (2016) in the M&A and Equity Capital Markets team at Veon (2012), a global telecommunications company.
Matthijs graduated from Utrecht University (LL.M. in Dutch law) in 2004 and from Maastricht University (MSc in International Business Studies) in 2002.
